Jose Herney has been related to coffee for his whole life. He comes from a family of coffee producers and he was surrounded by coffee trees in his upbringing. At the time, his family only produced and sold commercial coffee, in fact they didn’t dry the coffee, they used to sell it wet. However, before becoming a coffee producer himself, Jose Herney has learned everything from his father, “I used to go around side by side with my father, learning from him and also helping him.”
Now, Jose Herney has his own coffee farm with his wife, Nury. “My wife has a very important role on the farm, she is my right hand. And she’s also in charge of the food for the workers of the farm, and, you know, no one will work if they’re hungry! hahaha.” Jose Herney laughs. Jose Herney has only produced coffee since 2020. Before this, he had no idea about the quality of his coffee, in fact he still doesn’t have a drying station, and he dried the coffee at his father’s farm. “It’s funny because I used to produce commercial coffee, but one day I took over a sample of my coffee to Caravela for them to analyze it and it turned out that I was producing a coffee with a high cupping score! Since then, I’ve been focused on maintaining the quality and improving processes. I’m happy because I now know that I’m on the right track!” In the short term, Jose Herney plans to finish building his post-harvest and drying infrastructure. “That way, I can stop bothering my father asking him to dry my coffee at his place.” says Jose. His dream now, is to see his name and the name of his farm printed on a coffee bag wherever they consume my coffee.
