The first formal settlements in the region came into existence in the late 16th century when the Spanish arrived to the region looking for gold but instead found silver, and hence the name “La Plata”, meaning “silver”. In the year of 1651, a parish named San Sebastian de La Plata was created by catholic priests, the name honours Sebastian de Belalcazar, a famous Spanish conquistador, as well as the silver found in the region.
This special coffee is the result of over ten years of collaboration between Caravela and the cooperative Global Cafes, the latter a coffee growers association made up of more than 100 small and medium sized coffee producers from La Plata and some nearby municipalities in Cauca and Huila. Its member’s farms range from 1 to 5 hectares and are mostly located at higher altitudes - above 1,500 MASL. The farms are mostly cultivated with traditional varieties such as Caturra and Typica. Caravela has installed a cupping lab and has a full-time quality analyst working alongside with the growers that deliver their coffee to Global Cafes. In order to guarantee a consistent quality and cup profile, every single lot delivered – no matter it’s size – is physically analysed and cupped. Only the best lots that fit the San Sebastian profile are selected.
